Today we’re making a Halloween junk journal using something you might not normally think of as a craft supply: a Halloween greeting card.

I picked up a stack of Halloween cards from Dollar General and decided to turn them into little handmade journals for October. Using leftover junk-journaling papers, envelopes, a little translucent paper, waxed thread, and some very well-loved bookbinding tools, I put together a journal with plenty of room for daily writing, notes, ephemera, and all the little things that make October fun.

This craft did not go exactly according to plan. There were crooked pages, a stubborn sewing needle, tangled thread, a rusty guillotine, and more than one moment when I wondered if I was ever going to finish these journals. But eventually, we got there.

And honestly, that’s part of the fun.

This isn’t about making a perfect journal. It’s about using what you have, experimenting, repurposing things, and making something that feels like your own. You don’t need a guillotine, a specialty punch, or expensive supplies to make one. Scissors, an awl or something sharp, some paper, clips, thread, and a Halloween card can get you started.

I also show you how I used the envelopes as pockets for ephemera and how I assembled and stitched the signatures into the card covers.
